Summer. It’s that time of the year that everyone looks forward to. Young and old alike! And even if you happen to be someone who favours beanies over beach days, there is no denying some of the best memories are made soaking up the sunshine. This year, summer is more anticipated than ever, as the season is accompanied with the easing of lockdown restrictions across the UK. In light of this, and the incoming school holidays, we have put together some of our top, family friendly activities for the summer!
Make the most of the outdoors
This may seem like an obvious one but make the most of the good weather and longer daylight hours by spending a good portion of your time outside. London is not short of recreational and feature parks which offer great opportunities for picnics, cycling, sightseeing or even a relaxing stroll towards the end of the day. Many parks have additional facilities such as children’s gymnasiums, petting zoos and water features which can also be enjoyed.
Brace the waters
London may be an in land city, but it doesn’t mean there isn’t plenty of opportunity to enjoy the waters. Boat rides are a popular choice for families looking for a fun activity. The river Thames has several different options available, whether you want a relaxing sunset ride or more of a thrill seeking speedboat adventure! If you are thinking of planning your trip, we recommend the highly rated City Cruises. City Cruises offers both hop-on, hop-off rides as well as a circular loop of the river. They also have the option for dining on the waters which offers an experience like no other with your loved ones.
Check out a museum, or three
While we fully recommend spending as much time outdoors, we can’t deny the appeal of visiting museums in the summertime. With the longer daylight hours, summer gives you the opportunity to Museum hop like never before. London is home to a number of world class museums favoured across all ages. While the Natural History Museum and British Museum are obvious choices, we recommend giving the Science Museum, Transport Museum and Design Museum a go!
Foraging and fruit picking
If you are prepared to travel a little out of London, the later half of summer offers a great chance to forage for berries or even visit one of the many ‘pick your own’ strawberry farms. Parkside Farm is the easiest option for those who don’t want to spend too much time on the road, and is pretty accessible from the city. Many of these farms are great to visit in Autumn too, when apples are the fruit of the day!
Have a city staycation
With so much to do and all the sunshine to do it, a city staycation is a great alternative to going out to the coast. English beaches, although not without their merit, are not everyone’s cup of tea. And you can have as great a summer spending it in the city with your family. With a plethora of parks, landmarks, markets and events, no time in the city will be wasted on not having a good time. If you are looking for a central location, with plenty of family friendly room options, be sure to check out the Mayflower Hotel. Located in Earls Court, just a three minute walk from the tube, Mayflower is the perfect home base for your fun filled summer staycation with the family. Enquire here: https://www.mayflowerhotel.co.uk
